Traffic Violations Handled in Bland County

The Bland County General District Court hears all types of traffic cases. Most are simple infractions that can be paid without going to court. Others require a court appearance. Knowing the difference matters because missing a required court date can lead to a failure-to-appear charge and extra fines.

Reckless driving is one of the more serious traffic offenses in Virginia. Under Virginia Code Title 46.2, reckless driving is a Class 1 misdemeanor, not just an infraction. That means it goes on your criminal record if convicted. Driving 20 mph or more over the posted limit, or over 80 mph regardless of the limit, can trigger a reckless driving charge under Virginia Code Section 46.2-862. Speed limit rules are set out in Virginia Code Section 46.2-870.

Other common traffic cases in Bland County include speeding, failure to obey traffic signals, improper lane changes, following too closely, and driving with a suspended license. Each violation carries its own set of potential fines and points. The Virginia DMV assigns demerit points to your driving record for most moving violations. Too many points can lead to license suspension.

Virginia uses a points system managed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Safe driving earns positive points over time. Violations add negative points. If your point total drops too low, the DMV may require a driver improvement course or suspend your license. Bland County traffic convictions feed directly into this statewide system.

Paying a Traffic Ticket in Bland County

Many traffic tickets in Virginia are prepayable, which means you can pay the fine without showing up to court. Your citation will say whether it is prepayable. If it is, you have a few ways to pay.

The easiest way is online. The Virginia Judicial System offers an online ticket payment portal where you can pay by credit or debit card. A 4% convenience fee applies to all card payments. The Bland County combined court accepts these payments, but note that online payments stop at 4:00 PM daily. After you pay, print the final screen as proof. You will not receive a separate receipt by mail.

You can also pay in person at the clerk's office during business hours. Cash, check, and card may be accepted, but confirm with the clerk's office before you go. If you want to pay by mail, send a check or money order made out to the clerk of the court. Include your ticket number and full name. Do not send cash by mail.

If the offense is not prepayable, you must appear in court on the date listed on your citation. Bland County is a rural court, and missing your court date can result in a failure-to-appear charge. That adds a $35 fine on top of whatever the original ticket cost. If you cannot make your court date, contact the clerk's office at least one day in advance to request a continuance.

Virginia law allows people to petition for expungement of certain charges under Virginia Code Section 19.2-392.2. Not all traffic offenses qualify. Simple infractions that were paid generally stay on the record. Charges that were dismissed or resulted in acquittal may be eligible. Talk to an attorney if you think you may qualify for expungement of a Bland County traffic record.
