Traffic Violations and Augusta County Roads
Augusta County is a large rural county in the Shenandoah Valley. Interstate 81 runs through the county and is a major enforcement corridor. The Virginia State Police are active on I-81 year-round. Speed violations on the interstate are common, and many end up as reckless driving charges. Under Section 46.2-862, driving 80 mph or more anywhere in Virginia, or exceeding a posted limit by 20 mph or more, is automatically reckless driving, regardless of the road.
Speed limits on Virginia roads are set under Section 46.2-870. On I-81 through Augusta County, the typical limit is 70 mph. That means reaching 90 mph is 20 over, which meets the threshold. Going 80 mph when the limit is 70 is only 10 over and would not be reckless on its own, but reaching 80 mph anywhere does trigger the charge regardless of the limit.
All traffic convictions in Augusta County are reported to the Virginia DMV, which assigns demerit points. Points stay on your record for two years from the offense date. A driver improvement course can earn back five safe driving points. Check the DMV site for approved providers.
What Augusta County Traffic Records Include
Traffic case records in Augusta County document the full story of a citation from stop to outcome. Each file includes the defendant's name and address, the date and location of the stop, the charge and Virginia code section, the officer's name and agency, the hearing date, and the final disposition. If a fine was paid, that is part of the record. If the case was continued, deferred, or dismissed, those outcomes are noted.
These records are public. The court does not restrict access to routine traffic case files. People commonly request these records to verify a driving history, check on a family member's case, or look up an old citation. Bring a valid ID if you visit in person. For mail requests, include as much identifying information as possible to help the clerk locate the right file.
If a charge against you was dismissed or you were acquitted, Virginia's expungement statute at Code Section 19.2-392.2 may allow you to petition for expungement of that record. Most traffic convictions, including paid fines, cannot be expunged under current Virginia law.
