Traffic Laws in Manassas
Traffic in the City of Manassas follows Virginia state law under Virginia Code Title 46.2. Manassas is in Northern Virginia with significant commuter traffic and busy routes connecting to Prince William County and the broader Washington, D.C. metro area. Speed enforcement on local roads and at school zones is active. Officers from the Manassas City Police enforce traffic laws within the city.
Reckless driving is the most serious common traffic charge in Virginia. It is a Class 1 misdemeanor under Virginia Code § 46.2-852, meaning it is a criminal offense. Under Virginia Code § 46.2-862, reckless driving by speed applies when a driver goes 20 mph or more over the posted limit, or exceeds 85 mph anywhere in the state. In Manassas, where many roads have limits in the 35 to 45 mph range, reaching the reckless driving threshold takes less speed than you might expect.
Standard speeding violations below the reckless threshold add demerit points to your Virginia DMV record. Virginia uses a demerit point system to track driving history. Points stay on your record for two years from the violation date. Enough points within 12 or 24 months can result in a mandatory driver improvement course or a suspension. Minor speeding violations add three points. More serious violations add more. Reckless driving adds six demerit points and carries potential jail time on top of fines.
The court offers a traffic school option for eligible drivers. A driver with a clean record who meets specific criteria may be able to complete a driver improvement course in exchange for dismissal of a minor speeding charge. Ask the clerk or speak with a local attorney about eligibility. Not all charges qualify. The court also handles cases involving improper U-turns, failure to obey traffic signals, expired tags, and other violations that come up frequently in a dense suburban area like Manassas.
Paying Manassas Traffic Fines
Prepayable Manassas traffic fines can be paid online through the Virginia Courts system. The process is described on the Virginia Courts traffic payment page. Search your case, mark it for payment, and complete the transaction. Prepaying means you accept the charge as guilty. The conviction goes on your record. For a minor infraction that you are not disputing, this is a fast way to resolve the case without going to court.
Prepayments in person can be made any day before your court date at the General District Court at 9311 Lee Avenue, Suite 230. The court accepts cash, check, money order, and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover). All courts in Virginia apply a 4% convenience fee to all credit card payments, whether made in person, by phone, or online. Prepayments by phone are also accepted at (703) 792-6141 using a credit card. The 4% fee applies to phone payments as well.
Misdemeanor charges such as reckless driving cannot be prepaid. You must appear in court. Failing to appear results in additional charges and likely a license suspension. Contact the clerk at (703) 792-6141 if you have a scheduling conflict before your court date. After any payment related to a license suspension, you must bring proof of payment to the Virginia DMV to restore driving privileges. Payment to the court does not automatically reinstate your license, and taking your paid receipt to the DMV at least 10 days after conviction may be required to clear the record.
