Traffic Laws and Violations in Galax

Traffic violations in the City of Galax follow Virginia state law. The most serious common charge is reckless driving, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor under Virginia Code § 46.2-852. Unlike a simple speeding ticket, a reckless driving conviction goes on your criminal record. It is not just a traffic infraction. Virginia handles reckless driving more like a criminal offense than most other states do.

Speed is one of the main triggers for reckless driving charges in Virginia. Under Virginia Code § 46.2-862, driving 20 mph or more over the posted limit counts as reckless driving. Going over 85 mph anywhere in the state is also reckless driving regardless of the speed limit. On many two-lane roads in the Galax area, the speed limits are lower than on highways, so that 20 mph threshold can be reached sooner than people expect.

Standard speeding tickets below the reckless driving threshold are traffic infractions. They add demerit points to your Virginia DMV record and require payment of fines, but they are not criminal charges. Accumulating too many points in a short period can result in a mandatory driver improvement course or a license suspension. Virginia tracks your driving history from the date each violation occurred, not the conviction date.

Other common traffic violations in Galax include failing to stop at a sign or light, improper lane changes, and driving with expired tags or no insurance. The fines vary by charge. Driving without a valid license or while suspended is a criminal offense and requires a court appearance.

Paying Galax Traffic Fines

If your Galax traffic ticket is eligible for prepayment, you can pay it online at the Virginia Courts traffic payment page. Find your case, check that it is marked as prepayable, and submit your payment by card. Prepaying means you accept the charge without going to court. Make sure you understand the impact on your driving record before doing this.

Misdemeanor charges such as reckless driving are not eligible for online prepayment. You must appear in court for those. Missing a court date leads to additional charges and can cause your license to be suspended. If you have a scheduling conflict, contact the clerk's office before your court date to ask about options.

In-person payment is accepted at the courthouse. Cash, check, and credit or debit cards are generally accepted. Virginia courts apply a 4% convenience fee on all card transactions. There is no way around this fee if you use a card. If your license was suspended for an unpaid Galax fine, paying the court is only the first step. You must also contact the Virginia DMV to restore your driving privileges after the fine is cleared.
